Planning a day out with your dog? Hayling Island has you covered!

Ah, Hayling Island. The kind of place where you can blow away cobwebs with fresh sea air, the beach stretches for miles, and Rebel thinks he owns the whole thing. Tucked between Portsmouth and the South Downs, Hayling is a little gem on the Hampshire coast: part seaside town, part saltmarsh haven, and 100% dog-approved (according to Rebel, anyway).

If you've ever driven over the causeway with your windows down on a sunny day, with your dog's ears flapping in the breeze, you'll know exactly what I mean. Whether you're into windswept walks, pub lunches with paws under the table, or just finding a quiet spot to let your dog zoom around like nobody’s watching, Hayling delivers.

In this blog, I’ll share some of Rebel’s favourite hangouts — from fantastic places to grab a snack to perfect walks to stretch the legs — because this island isn’t just for the humans.

Dog-friendly things to do

There’s no denying that Hayling Island comes fully equipped for dog-friendly days out, with the sheer number of beaches at your disposal. But when you’ve had your fill of beach zoomies and seaweed-sniffing, there’s still plenty to do that’ll keep both you and your dog entertained — and no, not everything involves sand in your sandwiches.

You wouldn’t think a seaside amusement park would be dog-friendly, would you? But Funland, right on the seafront at Beachlands, welcomes well-behaved dogs on leads. While you might not be strapping your pooch into the log flume anytime soon (thankfully), it’s a great spot for a wander, some people-watching, and maybe a cheeky doughnut or two.

There's plenty of space to stroll through, there are dog water bowls dotted around, and it has a really laid-back atmosphere. It's loud, colourful, and brilliantly British — and your dog can absolutely be part of the chaos (in a good way).

So if you're in the mood for arcade nostalgia, candy floss, or watching the kids scream on the waltzers while your dog judges everyone from the side-lines, this is the place.

My second recommendation is a bit of a hidden gem. The Hayling Seaside Railway is a charming little narrow-gauge train that runs between Beachlands and Eastoke Corner — and dogs ride free! Yes, free. Your dog gets the wind in their ears, and you get a relaxing ride with gorgeous views of the coastline, salt marshes, and open skies. It’s a win-win.

It’s especially handy if you’ve done a long walk along the beach and don’t fancy the trek back. Just hop on, sit back, and let the train do the hard work while your dog pretends to be a Victorian explorer.

Our favourite dog walks

Beyond the beach, there are some cracking walks that offer a mix of scenery, history, and plenty of sniffing opportunities. Whether you're in the mood for a long, leisurely stroll or a quick jaunt with your four-legged friend, there’s a walk to suit every pace. Just remember to pack some treats and maybe a towel — because if there's water, there's a good chance your dog will find it! Here are two of our favourites:

A firm favourite with local dog walkers — and for good reason. The Hayling Billy trail is a flat, easygoing trail that follows the old railway line that used to chug its way down the island (sadly no trains now, just Labradors with zoomies).

It runs from just over the bridge down the west side of Hayling, with cracking views across Langstone Harbour and plenty of spots to pause for a breather, throw a ball, or take a wind-blown selfie with your dog’s ears at full lift-off.

There’s free parking near the start, and because it's a disused railway line, the path is wide, straight, and a dream if you’ve got a dog who loves to sniff every. Single. Blade. Of. Grass.

Top tip: Watch out for cyclists — not everyone enjoys an unexpected collision with a wayward Westie.

The Langstone Harbour walk is a little shorter, but still full of charm (and sniffs). It kicks off just north of the bridge, loops along the edge of Langstone Harbour, and gives you those peaceful, wide-open views that make you feel like you've really got out — even if you’re only 10 minutes from a Greggs.

It’s great if your dog likes a bit of variety — a bit of foreshore, a bit of greenery, and plenty of interesting things to roll in (be warned!).

Do check the tides before you go, though — part of the walk skirts the edge of the water, and while your dog may love a paddle, you probably don’t want to swim home.

Rebel-approved places to eat

After a full-on day of sniffing and chasing seagulls, your dog’s probably ready for a nap — and let’s be honest, so are you. But before you both collapse in a happy, sandy heap, here are a couple of top spots where you can grab a bite without having to leave your soggy doggy in the boot of the car.

Right at the far end of the island, perched on the edge of the Solent, sits the Ferryboat Inn — and yes, your dog is very welcome (possibly more welcome than some humans, let’s be honest). This place is a local legend: proper pub grub, a huge beer garden with sea views, and the real showstopper? An actual dog menu.

We’re talking Bark Burgers, Sunday Roasts (yes, for dogs), and even dog-friendly “beer” so your pup can toast to their best life. You tuck into your fish and chips, they tuck into theirs — everyone wins.

You’re likely to want to enjoy the views if the sun is shining, but dogs are also allowed inside in the bar area. Which (let’s face it) is ideal for when the British weather inevitably changes its mind.

Tucked just off the beaten track, Café Boho is every bit as cool as it sounds — and thankfully, not in a “you can’t sit with us” kind of way. Dogs are totally welcome, the staff are lovely, and there’s a good chance someone will coo over your pup while you’re waiting for your toasted ciabatta.

The vibe is relaxed, the coffee’s strong, and the food hits the spot — especially if you’ve just come off the Hayling Billy Trail and need a little pick-me-up (or a lot, depending on how far you walked). Expect fresh bakes, boho décor, and the kind of place you’ll want to linger in, whether your dog’s curled under the table or sneakily begging for crusts.

Their hot chocolate is top banana, so be sure to visit here in the colder winter months, too!
