Did someone say walkies?

There is nothing better than getting out and about for a walk with your dog in the countryside.  It's one of the main reasons I became a dog owner (well, that and having a waggy tail to greet me after a long day at work!)

Walking is an important part of any dog’s daily routine and will help keep them (and you!) physically and mentally healthy.

There are some fabulous places to walk dogs in Hampshire where you can enjoy some fresh air, take in the scenery, and strengthen your relationship with your dog. I want to share these with you!

This the first in my new series of “The best places in Hampshire to explore with your dog”

Topics will include things like:

  • Best places to walk your dog in Hampshire

  • Best dog-friendly coffee shops in Hampshire **

  • Best dog-friendly pubs in Hampshire**

  • Best places to socialise your puppy in Hampshire

** I have selflessly sampled pub grub and cakes in order to bring you this series. You are welcome!

Before we get started with a couple of new walks, I thought I would share with you some of my Top Tips for ensuring you both have a nice walk!

If you are one of my clients you will know I firmly share the mantra of "it's their walk and not yours!". If you need to get out to clear your head after a stressful meeting at work, did you know its okay to not take your dog and go by yourself? Its true! Just because you are going for a walk - you do not have to take your dog! However, when its “walkies” time - there are a few rules I follow.

Tip 1: Let them sniff!

I actively encourage sniffing (or what I affectionately call, sniffari's).

Why?

1) Sniffing decreases your dogs stress levels and reduces their heart rate

2) Sniffing is mentally stimulating (this is just as important as physical exercise but often overlooked)

3) Sniffing helps dogs to learn about the world around them

Tip 2. Let them choose the way!

Allowing your dog to lead (pardon the pun) the way gives them extra choice in a world where their choices are so limited. We choose when and what they eat, what time they go for walks, when it's time for bed....so why not allow them choose the direction of travel?

If you ever see me leave our cul-de-sac you will see me stop and check which way my dogs want to go (Left? Right? Over the road?).

Tip 3. Remember, to pick a walking venue that is best suited to your dog is important to ensure they don't become overwhelmed or over stimulated.

Whether your dog is an established family member or you have a new puppy joining your family, one thing’s for sure: Hampshire is a treasure trove of paw-some places to explore. From forests and fields to beaches and trails, there’s no shortage of adventures waiting for you and your pet. So grab the lead, and a handful of treats, and let’s dive into the best dog-friendly spots in Hampshire. Ready? Let’s go!

New featured walk: Warblington Beach Circular

Distance: 3.4 km

Time: It’s an easy path that usually takes about 40 minutes to complete.

Location: This loop trail is near Havant, Hampshire. Starting Point for the Warblington Beach Circular : Church Ln, Havant PO9 2TU (click on link above for a preview of the trail)

It’s popular for birdwatching, hiking, and running, but you can still find some peace if you go during quieter times. The trail’s open all year and is lovely in any season. Dogs are welcome, and they can even go off-lead in certain spots. This trail offers great views over the water and through farm fields as you walk along the paths and beach, passing by St. Thomas's Church on your way back. Just a heads-up—this route is only doable at low tide, so make sure to check the tide times so you don’t get caught by rising water!

Key Points about this walk:

  • Parking (at the time of writing this!) is free!

  • Less than an hour so good for senior dogs

  • Non-crowded so good for nervous dogs

Watch your step on the rougher sections, especially if it’s wet, and be cautious along the roads. Sturdy shoes are a good idea!

In need of refreshments?

I recommend going to the The Ship Inn, Fuller’s Pub & Restaurant in Langstone which (of course or it wouldn't be mentioned here) is dog friendly! Yipee! It's only a 5 min drive (2.1 miles from starting point)

New featured walk: Fancy going a little further afield? Then try Alice Holt Forest.

Forests just have that magical feel, don’t they? Alice Holt Forest is a wonderful spot to escape with your pup, offering miles of trails, shaded pathways, and even some family-friendly activities if you’re bringing the whole family.

Distance: 2.7 miles

Time: 1.5 hours

Location: GU10

Key Points about this walk:

  • Pay and display parking

  • Visitor centre

  • Café and picnic area (no need to stop off at the pub - you have all you need right here!)

  • Adventure Play Areas: If you’re visiting with little humans too, the play areas and sculptures add an extra touch of fun.

The route (there are plenty…but this is a nice one)

1 Exit the car park heading south. Before reaching the café building, take the long, straight path to the east. When you arrive at a T-junction with a muddy path ahead, turn right and stay on the well-maintained path. This path will gently rise before descending. After approximately 500 meters, take the path on your left as it continues downhill. Follow this well-maintained path or access road as it curves north.

2 The well-maintained path or access road will eventually divide; take the route heading northeast. The road will curve to the left, leading you past Lodge Pond.

3 Approximately 600 meters after the path starts descending again, turn onto the path branching to your left. Follow the paths southward to return to the car park.

Happy exploring, and don’t forget to share your adventures with us at @barkerandhound_hampshire! Let’s see those muddy paws, sandy snouts, and happy tails!
